STUDENT DROPOUTS
Frank Daley is an expert on dropouts from college, university and high school. He acts as an expert in legal cases and as an educational consultant to organizations, schools and individuals.
His expertise lies in the two complex areas of student retention: statistics and causality.
STATISTICS
Until the recent and prevalent dropout crisis and its concomitant social and financial problems, colleges and universities were not strong at record-keeping regarding dropouts. They had so many students that while many students dropped out, others in their multitudes were there to take their places.
That is still true, but the dropout question has entered the public sphere for many reasons and educational institutions are struggling to keep up. Legal and educational specifics on these questions are difficult to answer.
Dropout statistics are also university-specific so that it is difficult to compare those of one institution with another. The range for deeming that a person has “dropped” out of university, for example, ranges from 6-to 9 years for a four-year program. The question isn’t so much legal as institutional.
CAUSALITY
The question of dropout causality is even more complex. There is a wide range of reasons for the dropout rate. The Gates Foundation put a lot of money into the belief that money was the main reason for college dropouts. It abandoned that premise when it proved erroneous. Money is one cause among many but it is not the main cause or even the most important.
Mr. Daley is conversant with all the reasons for dropouts and their interrelated importance. His book, Who Are You And What Are You Doing Here? addresses the question in some depth.
